What AI-Assisted Development Actually Looks Like in Practice

Where AI tools genuinely help in development, where they fall short, and what it means for the quality of work you receive.

I've been using AI tools in my development workflow for about eighteen months now. Not because of the hype, but because some of them genuinely make me more productive. When I talk to potential clients about how I work, though, I often sense confusion or skepticism about what "AI-assisted development" actually means. Some people imagine I'm just prompting ChatGPT to build their entire application. Others worry that AI makes developers lazy or produces unreliable code.

The reality is more nuanced and, honestly, more interesting.

What AI Tools Actually Do Well

Let me start with where these tools shine. I primarily use Cursor as my editor and Claude (both through Cursor and directly via API) for various development tasks. Recently, I've also been experimenting with MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers to give AI tools better access to project-specific context.

Boilerplate and repetitive code is where AI assistance feels almost magical. Setting up authentication flows, creating CRUD endpoints, writing database migrations — these are tasks I've done hundreds of times. AI tools can generate solid first drafts of this code in seconds. I'm not saving hours on any individual task, but those fifteen-minute tasks scattered throughout a project add up quickly.

Refactoring is another area where I've found real value. When I need to extract a large function into smaller pieces, or convert a component from one pattern to another, I can highlight the code and ask the AI to perform the transformation. It's not that I couldn't do this manually — it's that the AI handles the mechanical parts while I focus on reviewing whether the refactoring actually improves the code.

Test generation surprised me. I was skeptical at first, but AI tools are genuinely good at writing unit tests, especially for pure functions and utility methods. They catch edge cases I might have overlooked when writing tests manually. I still write my own integration and end-to-end tests for critical paths, but having AI generate a solid test suite for utility functions saves significant time.

Documentation is less exciting but perhaps more impactful. AI tools are excellent at writing clear docstrings, README files, and inline comments. They're particularly good at explaining complex regex patterns or documenting function parameters. This has improved my documentation consistency across projects, which matters more than I initially expected.

Where AI Tools Fall Short

Here's where things get real. AI tools have significant limitations, and understanding these limitations is what separates productive AI-assisted development from a mess.

Architectural decisions remain firmly in the human domain. Should this be a microservices architecture or a monolith? How should we structure the database schema? What state management pattern fits this application? AI can discuss trade-offs if you ask, but it doesn't understand your specific constraints: your budget, timeline, team size, or tolerance for complexity. These decisions require judgment that comes from experience and context that the AI simply doesn't have.

Domain-specific logic is another weakness. When I'm building something with complex business rules — pricing calculations with multiple tiers and edge cases, or workflow systems with intricate state transitions — AI-generated code is often subtly wrong. It might look right. It might even pass basic tests. But it doesn't understand the domain the way someone who's spent hours discussing requirements with a client does.

Debugging subtle issues is where I've learned to trust AI the least. When something works fine in development but fails intermittently in production, or when you're tracking down a race condition, AI tools often suggest plausible-sounding fixes that don't address the actual problem. They're pattern-matching machines, and subtle bugs often require understanding that goes beyond pattern matching.

I've also noticed that AI tools can be confidently wrong about library-specific APIs or framework conventions, especially for less common libraries or newer versions. They'll generate code using deprecated methods or non-existent functions. This is improving, but it means I'm constantly verifying suggestions against actual documentation.

The Senior Developer's Role

This brings me to the crucial point that I emphasize with every client: AI tools are productivity multipliers, not replacements. They make experienced developers more efficient, but they don't eliminate the need for experience.

My judgment determines which AI suggestions to accept, which to modify, and which to reject entirely. I'm reading every line of AI-generated code. I'm considering whether it fits the broader architecture. I'm thinking about edge cases and error handling. I'm evaluating performance implications. I'm ensuring consistency with existing patterns in the codebase.

When AI generates a database query, I'm thinking about indexing strategies and N+1 query problems. When it creates a React component, I'm considering reusability and accessibility. When it writes a function, I'm thinking about naming, single responsibility, and how it fits into the module's public API.

The speed gains from AI assistance are real, but they come from reducing the time I spend on mechanical tasks, not from bypassing the thinking that good software requires.

What This Means for Projects

For clients, AI-assisted development means I can deliver more value in less time, but the nature of that value hasn't changed. I'm still doing code review. I'm still making architectural decisions. I'm still debugging complex issues. I'm still ensuring code quality and maintainability.

The difference is that I spend less time typing boilerplate and more time thinking about whether we're building the right thing in the right way. That shift in how I allocate my time benefits everyone involved in a project.

AI tools haven't made software development easy. They've just changed which parts of the job consume the most time. The hard parts — understanding requirements, making trade-offs, designing systems, and ensuring quality — remain exactly as hard as they've always been. And that's probably how it should be.
